Enable the Canvas in Various Browsers

Applies to Version(s): Thesis 2

One of the great features of the Thesis Skin Editor is the Canvas—this is a special, separate browser window which updates to reflect your HTML changes every time you save a template, and it updates your CSS live while you write it (and also when you save a Package or Variable).

Since Thesis needs to open a separate pop-up window to display the Canvas, here’s how to make sure it can do that in the most modern browsers:

Firefox

If pop-ups are blocked in Firefox when you open the Skin Editor and Thesis attempts to launch the Canvas, then you should see a yellow alert bar across the top of your screen which says “Firefox prevented this site from opening a pop-up window.” with a Preferences (Options on Windows) button on the right—click that button, and then select “Allow pop-ups for [yoursite]“.

Then refresh the Skin Editor window (Ctrl-R on Windows, CMD-R on Mac), and Thesis should be able to successfully launch the Canvas pop-up window this time.

Chrome

If pop-ups are blocked in Chrome when you open the Skin Editor and Thesis attempts to launch the Canvas, then you should see a “Pop-ups blocked” alert message within the URL address bar—simply click on that message, and then select “Always allow pop ups from [yoursite]“.

Then refresh the Skin Editor window (Ctrl-R on Windows, CMD-R on Mac), and Thesis should be able to successfully launch the Canvas pop-up window this time.

Safari

Safari does not offer the ability to control pop-ups on a per-site basis — they’re either ALL blocked, or ALL allowed. To allow all pop-ups:

  1. Go to Safari > Preferences.
  2. Click the Security icon/tab.
  3. Ensure that the “Block Pop-Up Windows” option is NOT checked.
  4. Close the opened dialog box(es).

Internet Explorer 9

If pop-ups are blocked in IE9 when you open the Skin Editor and Thesis attempts to launch the Canvas, then you should see an alert bar across the bottom of your screen which says “Internet Explorer blocked a pop-up from [yoursite]” with an Options for this site button on the right — click that button, and then select “Always allow”.

Then refresh the Skin Editor window (Ctrl-R on Windows, CMD-R on Mac), and Thesis should be able to successfully launch the Canvas pop-up window this time.
