5 Inspirational Quotes from 5 Great Business People

by Derek Halpern · 30 comments

It’s the holiday season, and you’re probably struggling to finish your shopping—I know I am.

Instead of the usual, long in-depth articles like WordPress SEO, I’ll share 5 quotes from some of my favorite business people. You’ll love them.

1. “Formal education will make you a living; self education will make you a fortune.” – Jim Rohn

I’m not knocking school. It’s important. However, when you have the ability to buy a book, and learn something that will help your business, you’re leagues ahead of everyone else.

2. “You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.” – Henry Ford

You may have ideas swirling around in your head, but you’ll never build a profitable online business without putting them into action. Don’t waste your excitement telling your friends about it, either. Use your excitement to fuel your project.

3. “It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” – Steve Jobs

Again, if you have a great idea, a solid action plan, and the will to make something succeed, just do it. You may want opinions from your friends, but they don’t know what they want. So, create your project, release it into the wild, and then continuously improve it—that’s how Thesis did it and it has worked well so far.

4. “Nothing draws a crowd like a crowd” – P.T. Barnum

Today, we call this social proof or social validation. On the flip side, nothing disbands a crowd like the lack of a crowd. So if your site looks dead (no comments, tweets, or subscribers), breathe life into it. Read Nonverbal Website Intelligence to find out how.

5. “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey

It’s the holidays, and there’s no better time to be content with what you have. However, in business, you’re better off being hungry. So, after you’re done celebrating, refer to Henry Ford’s quote and get to work :-D .

Sujit Wasnik

This is really an inspirational article.

I couldn’t agree more and great reminders to just get off your (my) duff and just do it!

Another great quote right there, there’s no such thing as the perfect anything in our minds just the minds of our clients and customers. The only way to get their needs, wants or desires is to unleash yours…

Thanks for your awesome product, Keep up the great work!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays To You and Yours…

Derek

Happy Holidays to you as well. My favorite quote here is the Jim Rohn one. Self-education is priceless.

Adam

“Formal education will make you a living; self education will make you a fortune.”

So aptly put. Thanks! This was a nice change of pace and just what I needed before calling it quits for the holiday.

Derek

Glad you liked it. I know everyone is busy, so I wanted a few quick hits today, and I’m glad to see it was a success1

William kealy

Sue

G’Day Derek,

Great quotes to wrap up the year. Thanks. Here are a couple of my favourites.

I first saw this one 30 years ago in an auto workshop in country New South Wales, Australia: “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price has been forgotten” I don’t know who said it but I’ve always remembered it.

And here’s one from John Wooden: “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts”

Finally……..
What are the three ages of Santa?
1 You believe in Santa
2 You don’t believe in Santa
3 You are Santa

Enjoy Christmas

Regards

Leon

Derek

Love that second quote. “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.” Wish I knew about it before I wrote the post, and I would have added it, heh.

Phil Buckley

Great quotes, perfect tone right before Christmas.

Keep up the great work guys.

JohnH

Thanks for the inspiration. I’m going to print those out and frame them to remind me what is important. A great Christmas gift to myself.

Stan Horst

Love the quotes. Very inspiring and a reminder that any excitement and energy should be poured into the projects and hand, and making your venture successful. It is a waste of time telling others about what you’re going to do!

Naomi Niles

Yes indeed. Merry Christmas!!

Derek

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you too!

Marianne

Love the quotes, thanks. Am also reading REWORK, by 37signals.com. It’s very much along the lines of those quotes and more. My resolution is to actually put some of those quotes into action. Merry Everything to All.

Derek

Rework is a fantastic book. I’m a big fan of the 37 Signals team.

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

The difference between try and triumph is a little umph!
~ Unknown

When I was young, I observed that nine out of ten things I did were failures. So I did ten times more work.

~ Leo Burnett

Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work.
~ Thomas Edison

Love it!

Julia Winston

“You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.” – Henry Ford

Love a good quote and these are great. Thank you.
My favorite is “Formal education will make you a living; self education will make you a fortune.” – Jim Rohn. Something parents should keep in mind as they go into bankruptcy and there not yet worker bee children go into debt attending college they can not afford to attend.

Merry Christmas!

Kimberly Smith

Good inspirational quotes.
Here are a couple to inspire good market research… Measure twice, cut once.
A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

good stuff, every time i read one of these, it just keeps me moving forward, because I will never quit!!!

Sheryl Sisk Schelin

Hey guys- I really appreciate your consistent quality of these posts. I especially appreciate the tutorials, and resource lists (the one on blog design recently is killer). I do however have a problem, and since I cannot find any other way to contact you I’m hoping someone will see this comment and get in touch with me. I purchased Thesis last year, and use it on Tramadol Diaries currently. I wanted to change that to a new site I’m developing, but a series of catastrophes are keeping me from logging in: one, my Gmail account apparently got wiped of a number of old emails (including the one with my login info, I guess); two, my old laptop crashed (I had a copy of the login info there in a text file); and three, I cannot for the life of me recall the user name or email I used to sign up, and fear it might be one that’s no longer under my control. I’d be happy to give other info to verify my ID in email. Could someone please contact me? Thanks so much.

Sheryl Sisk Schelin

WOOT! Success. Found it. Never mind! Feel free to delete the above comment… um, and this one too I guess.

Brian

Great quotes heading into the new year. You definitely can’t build a rep on what you are going to do, but unfortunately so many try. Hopefully everyone will pursue their dreams and achieve them in 2011 to make it a spectacular year for all!
