Default Show Posts from Current Category/ Show Subs of Current Category

Ok, Rick asked for it...

I've searched through the wordpress extensions db as well as wp plugins but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

Looking for a widget that does the following:
  • Only Show Posts from the same category as the post being read. In other words, if I click on a post to read, show a list of all the posts from that category (or a set number of posts) in chronological order (just like recent posts)
  • If widget is on Front Page, show recent posts as normal (uhm, yeah, just like recent posts)
  • Same goes for "tags" pages as well. When the widget is on a tags page, only show most recent articles that share the same tags. (if this last one is too difficult, then I would revert the widget to what it would be on the front page, only recent posts)

This would work awesome if there was a siloing widget for categories. For instance;
Lets say I categorize on many levels, and use sub-cats and sub-sub-cats. Normally, wordpress (and thesis) would either show ALL the categories, or display the sub with an inset. I would like to see the following.
  • On Front Page, show only Top Level Categories
  • When a Category is clicked, then show it's sub-categories, but not the other TLC's subs.
  • If a different Top Level Category is clicked, it's sub would then show, but the previous TLC's subs would disappear.

These types of functionality will go an incredibly long way to silo the navigation of a blog.

Siloing navigation (also known as Page Rank Sculpting, including the nofollow attribute) is when you control the link flow of a blog to give the greatest benefit possible to each link. All the links on a page are benefited from the authority of the page it's on, but must share that link juice. This diminishes the "link juice" passed when there is a plethora of links on any given page. However, if you silo the navigation, you maximize the link flow any one the category or post links get.

Here's an example. Let's say you have 5 top cats, and each one has some subcats.

Pop Culture
- music
- movies
- fashion
News
- local
- national
- world
Internet
- hot spots
- interesting
- search
Shopping
- clothing
- electronics
- beauty
Politics
- local
- national
- global

In a typical wordpress install, all of these cats would show, and each would "pull" page rank or link flow from the first page, and all of the other pages. However if you apply siloing to the navigation, you would only see

Pop Culture
News
Internet
Shopping
Politics

These cat links would get the most benefit from the Front Page Links. Then if you click on Shopping, you would see

Pop Culture
News
Internet
Shopping
- clothing
- electronics
- beauty
Politics

So the cat Shopping got a big benefit, and it's Page Rank (or Authority) would increase, thus it's sub-cats would get a benefit because the top cat of Shopping would have so much more benefit to pass on. See what I mean?

In the case of posts from the same category, you would get a link benefit for two reasons.
  1. All the posts shown are "relative" or "related" to the shown post
  2. These posts are not "sharing" link juice with all the other posts, just the ones related to it.

These two widgets working together would be an AWESOME combination.

I actually found some code here:
WordPress › Support » [How To] Show Posts Related To Category Only?

That I will try out for the posts from current category.

Now I'm trying to find a category siloing thinger.

OK, now I found this sucker:

Collapsable, Foldable, Expandable Category menus for Wordpress: The Fold Category List Plugin

But it's pre 2.5, so it's not a widget. DAMN.

Nope, the last plugin kinda badliness.

BTW, I keep posting to this thread in hopes that I either find something and let the other members know what I find, OR, that the other members of the blog know a widget or plugin I need.

I'm trying to do the same thing.

I think the NavT plugin might do it, but it's got a lot of features so it's a bit difficult to figure out.

I'll let you know if I get it to work.

I haven't had any luck with this at all. I'm not a coder in any way, but I usually work with asp.net, and this function would be easy peasy with .net.

I tried NAVT, doesn't work for me. I like automating stuff. Set it and forget it is my modo.

But thanks for the help. Maybe Rick might come up with some answers here. He's been having fun custom coding stuff.
