Default Header width

Thanks for the very clear explanation up front: followed the steps, got a working header on my new Thesis version of Hot Topic, but...

I can't quite figure out how wide to make the header image to get it to line up under the nav bar. Set to 960 as per instructions, it hangs out way to the right. I've currently sized it to 846 px, which seems to be the width of the nav bar, but it runs short...

So, what combination of image dimensions and custom css code will get me the nicely fitting header I'm after?

Cheers

If you're using a picture of 960px wide, it should sit within the header just fine; see demo.rickbeckman.org for it in action.

If you're having problems with it lining up, let me know when it's live on your site and I'll get some custom CSS for you to force it to align.

Well, when I look at that in Safari or Firefox (on OS X), I see the red header hanging about 1.5" out to the left. Ideally, it should stop under the RSS sign and be centred - lining up with the two lines above the content and media bpx. You have the same issue, to my eyes...

It's all there now...

And thanks for the exceeding prompt response!

Strange... When I view it in Firefox on OS X, the header looks just fine. I'll have to research it more to see if I can improve upon the code.

Could this be something to do with em size versus absolute pixel dimensions?

Cheers

Using either 960px or 960em results in the same display for me.

I'm unsure why it'd be displaying differently for us. :\

It looks good, other than that it stops 90pixels short of the right side, but for the size of image you are using, it looks fine.

Rick, have walked thru this thread with my site and have successfully done several things based on your instruction. Thanks! I have a couple of questions though:
Still can't figure out how to get rid of the 'no categories' tab at top and sub one of my categories...
would like to more the Header title down some (I managed to move it over to right); it is seperate from my header image
also how would I change the font class?? I changed the color, but not sure Im gonna live it like that, do you have any color sugestions from a designers viewpt?
Is there a way to center the header image , it is offset. (I cannot change the image size)
one last question... regarding the tagline.... I tried to raise it up but the rotating image box raised up as well into the header area. Any way to tweak that tagline to be within the header image area?
Thanks Rick for any help you can give me. meg

I'd just like it to "fit" - without the stopping short.

So what pixel width should it be?
