Default Answers Blog Suggestions

I'm starting this thread as a place to take suggestions for the new Answers Blog. Woohoo, yay!

If you've got an idea for an Answer, post it here (along with any relevant links such as the forum thread or blog post which inspired the suggestion).

Please don't post fully fleshed out Answers directly in this post (whether it's part of your suggestion, or offered up as added info to someone else's) - I'd like to try to keep this thread as clean and simple as possible, so that things don't get overlooked.

If all you have is the Question, that's fine too - however, keep in mind that this thread is not intended for solution-seeking conversations. So, if you're posting something here because you haven't found the answer yet and are hoping to find it, then post it in the regular support areas of the forum first. Then when you have the answer, you can come back here to suggest it be added, and point to your thread!

Make sense?

I'll post a reply right after this to show how it might work, and we can go from there!

Q: How do I add a graphical header banner?

Q: How do I get rid of text header/tagline when I add a graphical banner?

Q: If I want to do more than just a single-image header banner graphic, what's a simple "and from here on it's HTML/PHP" hook I can use to get started?

Girlie says: Not sure what you specifically mean here, and if it can't be summed up in a brief, easy to understand post title, it may not be suitable for an Answers post. Do you have any forum posts or links that might help narrow this down?

Godhammer update: "Headers - More than One Image" requires a different approach (hooks) than the fairly simple (CSS) way to add a single background banner image, thus it can be confusing initially. Not sure if that's enough clarification?

Q: What are all the locations of major classes (image + test list). Kristarella made a nice "where stuff is" image, there is/was a text list also; updating this for 1.5 would be nice to reference on /answers.

Girlie says: I've seen Kristarella's "where the hooks are" image, as well as the text list in the manual - but I don't think I've seen one for the CSS classes? Any links you can provide?

Godhammer says: Chris noted Once I extract all the default layout stuff it'll make sense to construct something like that.

I think a "where to start" QA...
Seen a lot of posts lately in the forums where a good dose of SugarRae's tutorial on Open Hooks + KristaRella's tutorials on Firebug w/ Firefox and a link to the Thesis Openhook plugin has become a standard answer...

Not that I'm saying I'm cutting and pasting it ( ) but it seems to work to get people pointed in the correct direction if there have no idea where to start

The Answers Blog is fantastic - I'm working through it right now editing my blogs. So thanks.

I have a problem though: there's an error on the Answers blog, but with comments closed and no information about how to report an error or send Feedback I don't know what to do with the information.

The error is on the page about the nav menu:

http://diythemes.com/answers/move-replace-nav-menu/

where it tells us to use this code:

<?php thesis_nav_menu(); />

but in fact the correct code is:

<?php thesis_nav_menu(); ?>

My suggestion is to add something to the Answers blog that allows folks to report a problem with the blog.

Cheers,

Miraz

I can't get my features/teasers to work on one of my blogs---but the other one is just fine. Can't find anything about this in the forum, would love to know how to fix. Thx.

michellelamar: If you've got an unresolved support issue, please open a thread in the regular forums to get help with that; the Answers blog is for commonly requested functions, code, and "how-to" articles of that nature, as opposed to one-off issues.

miraz: I've corrected the code in that Answers post (looks like I forgot to hit my shift key when typing that character), thanks for the heads up!

I think this will be a great resource for people new to Thesis. My suggestion would be to make a custom layout.

Right now, you can find something if you know what it is you're looking for. It would be better if the homepage looked more like a archive page with all posts listed under the appropriate categories (perhaps with a small description underneath).

I think that would improve this greatly and make it easier for people to find things (and discover things they perhaps never thought of doing before).

May we please have a full Nav Menu on the Answers blog? The only choice at the moment is Home. To get out of it, I have to click on the DIYthemes link in the footer. It'd be nice to be able to go to the forums or the Thesis site or the Dev blog from the Nav Menu without having to resort to a browser bookmark. Thanks in advance.
