Default Any Thoughts on "Best" Font Size

As the topic indicates I wanted to ask everyone their thoughts on the "best" fontsize for the content area of the blog. According to Google Analytics at least 40% of my users still use a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or lower and I wonder if a size 14 font is too big?

Yeah I know its a silly question. I have not used a monitor with that low a resolution in at least 5 years so its hard for me to judge.

I think 11-13pt usually looks about right, depends on chosen font also - and all very subjective. Though there are reports and research you could find, probably good ones if paid, for a given target market.

If 40% at 1024, 20% at 800, and you run a site about retirement homes or group tours, 12pt might be too small for your audience.

What font would you go.

I'm trying Helvetica right now but I'm sure about the results. Any thoughts?

The "best font" is entirely subjective, though you'll find folks who say "always use serifs" or "always use sans-serifs." It comes down to what feels right to you. I've gone back and forth, and currently use good old Georgia for actual content, various Lucidas >Verdana > Helvetica for sidebar stuff, and a heavy Helvetica for entry headers. I suggest trying a couple of different styles to see what you like.

I've done Georgia, Arial, Bookman Old, and a few "not as sure" (like Cambria) nice fonts with backups for live sites. In a variety of sizes, usually 11-14.

For what they intended to do, each did its job.
